Boone KOA – Boone, NC

BIG RIGS BEWARE! We camped at Boone KOA in our 6 month old 35′ fifth wheel which we were pulling with our 2 month old Ford F250 Lariat.

They did not provide an escort to the site as all other KOA’s we’ve stayed at have. The sites are very close together with large, low overhanging tree limbs and narrow roads with little room to swing wide for the pullthrus. We ended up scraping a hole in the roof of our RV, then breaking the back window of the truck trying to get out of the site without doing anymore damage to the roof. When we went to management to ask for a site we could actually fit in, they told us “we don’t know the limbs need to be trimmed until guests tell us” ! One of the other campers told us they’d had a similar problem and asked why they didn’t have escorts. Management told them “they didn’t have time.” She also suggested to management that they might want to tell big rigs their sites are small, to which management said, “why would we shoot ourselves in the foot?”

The park is lovely and clean, but after doing $10,000 in damage to our rig, it’s unlikely we’d ever want to stay there again.

  1. I’ve checked on the Boone KOA.. as of Aug. 2009 they still do not have cable TV available and I’m not sure if they have Wi-Fi… The other RV parks on Highway 105 between Boone and Linville have cable and Wi-Fi. I would not stay there for more than a night out and then only in a pinch.

  2. We stayed at this KOA last year and I noticed the same thing about the Big Rigs. We pull a 25′ Low Profile Trailer and we had no problem, but larger units were quite snug in several of the sites. The road up from town is somewhat steep and narrow as well. We enjoyed our short visit and found the facilities to be very nice. With a bigger trailer, Class A, or Fiver, I’d have been a bit nervous myself.
