Walnut Hills Campground & RV Park - Staunton, VA
Walnut Hills Campground and RV Park is a beautiful quaint spot for the family. They have a newly remodeled pool, a nice game room, and plenty of activities for the kids and adults.
The park has a 2 acre fishing lake for the fishing enthusiast. Sites are nice and level. The campground is open all year around. They are pet friendly and people friendly!
Watsadler Corps of Engineers Park - Watsadler, GA
Watsadler is one of several Corps of Engineers camping areas surrounding Lake Hartwell, one of the largest COE projects east of the Mississippi River. The campground has 51 campsites, of which 49 are lakefront sites like the one we had during June, 2008.
All campsites have water and electricity (50 amp), and there is a nice dump station at the campground. All interior roads are paved, and we had the joy of a pull-thru site. There are several pull-thrus available for those who don’t wish to try their backing skills.
Each site has a picnic table, a trash can, a grill and an in-ground fire pit. Several bath houses with hot water showers are in the park, and there’s plenty of playground equipment for the kids. Most people come to Watsadler to use the lake, and there is a boat launch, along with a swim-at-your-risk beach. Lake levels remain low from the drought, but the lake is still quite usable. The staff is friendly and supportive.
Nearby Hartwell offers a good selection of fast food franchise places along with a couple of local restaurants (Siblings and Fletcher’s) which deserve a visit. Clemson University and the University of Georgia are less than 50 miles away.
The only problem we had was the steady invasion of sugar ants. Go prepared, because regulars said this is a common problem at Watsadler. Otherwise, give this place a 9-plus. Reservations suggested.
Strawberry Park Resort Campground - Preston, CT
Strawberry Park is a campground that we have vacationed at for about ten years. It has many family activities we love and as the kids have grown their interest in the different activities has also changed.
Some of the very positive aspects of the campground are the security, variety of events, professionalism of the staff and yet the family feelings when you are there. Over the years the campgroud continues to improve facilities, appearance of sites and ball fields.
My children have made friendships that have lasted for years with fellow campers and staff.
One of our favorite activities continues to be the weekly barn fire in which most of the campground gathers on the central field, listen to live music and engae in sing alongs. The bingo, volleyball and horse shoes are all great activities but one of the most rewarding areas is the ice cream shop.
Thanks to all of the Strawberry Park worksers for years of wonderful times.
Cherrystone Camping Resort - Cheriton, VA
We rented a cabin at Cherrystone Camping Resort with A/C and a refrigerator. I wasn’t prepared for how close together the cabins were. They were all no more than 15-20 yards apart… and right on the road. Unfortunately we got a cabin on the corner of two roads and our picnic table and grill sat on the edge of the road. We moved it between the cabin next to us and ours.
Our cabin was tiny and the refrigerator didn’t work. My husband grabbed an employee to let her know and within 2 hours we had a brand new one delivered right out of the box. I was impressed about that and I can say that the customer service is excellent there.
Everything was immaculately clean and taken care of. The bathrooms smelled of disinfectant (a good smell to me) and were cleaned at least 3 times a day. The staff was always busy doing things and helping. The pools were clean and well maintained.
Merchandise in the general store was cheaper to or equal to than the Walmart price in our home area. Our kids had a blast and enjoyed the activities offered. All in all a good trip for the kids and now I need a vacation!
O’Connells Jellystone Park - Amboy, IL
We rented a golf cart for 10 minutes. They came to the swimming pool and publically took it back from us because we allowed our 4 year old grandson to drive. He sat in his grandpa’s lap and pretended to drive. He is 36″ tall so it is fairly obvious he couldn’t really drive the golf cart he couldn’t reach the pedals.
was no explaining this and they kept our deposit for this reason as well. They were willing to ignore the circle of 10 drunks swearing and playing their music loudly at 11:30 AM in the presence of a pool full of children. They also ignored a group blasting their music that could be heard 3 roads over where we were at.
We expected a nice family place with lots of activities for the kids. The staff was horrible. Don’t take your kids there, it isn’t family friendly.
Suncrest Resort - Moses Lake, WA
Located right off I-90 and just west of Moses Lake, Suncrest is a large resort with easy access on and off the freeway. The spaces are average size, with water, electricity, sewer and free WiFi. It doesn’t have cable TV and I notice that most folks have a satellite dish. They have a great pool and spa.
They offer Good Sam, Passport America and Coast to Coast discounts but only give Good Sam discounts in summer.
There is a park on Moses Lake about a mile away, not a bad walk if you need some exercise. The park has a boat ramp and swimming hole.
This is a great overnight spot for those traveling on I-90.
Oasis RV Park and Golf - Ephrata, WA
Oasis RV Park is another keeper with average size spaces, but lots of grass, mature trees, a lake and best for those who care a 9-hole golf course.
Half the sites are full service, free WiFi and cable TV and all for under $30.00 a night. The folks tell me the water in the pool is “nice” and you can take it from me, the ice cream in the little store really hits the spot on a warm summer day. The park was half full when we were there and the manager told me it’s usually completely full in summers so gas prices have started to hurt. They are open all year, but limited in winter.
I found the staff was extremely friendly and helpful.
The park has a little pond for the kids to fish in, and I already mentioned the golf course.
The town of Ephrada has a great museum, underline great. but plan to spend at least 2 hours there as there is lots to see. They have a little restored village and each ‘building’ is dedicated to some function, a barber, a dentist, a blacksmith, a hat shop, a school, a church, a bank, a newspaper, etc. The kids will love it all, especially the school house, but Grandma might have to explain the “Dunce”.
The town of Ephrata has a Wal-Mart and lots of antique shops to explore too.
Fort Casey State Park - Coupeville, WA
Fort Casey State APark is located at the Keystone Ferry Dock on Whidbey Island, south of Coupeville, Washington; and is open year round. This park does not take reservations, it’s first come, first serve.
Of the 35 total spaces, one pull-through is reserved for physically challenged customers. The park is a good overnight spot to dry camp if you have ferry reservations for the next morning to get to Port Townsend on the Keystone-Port Townsend Ferry and don’t want to get up early and race to get there. However, if you stay here in the winter, be sure you have a good inverter, as it could be a bit chilly! (In my opinion, this park should be renamed “Inverter Park” because of all the travel trailers and RV’s here that were using Honda inverters!)
Dry camping only, there are no hookups or sewer dumps. The restrooms/showers were… about what you would expect for a State Park, i.e., not perfect, but passable. The showers were 50 cents for three minutes. There are water faucets located about every third camping spot, but your hoses won’t fit because these water faucets are meant for filling up buckets. There is a “winter water supply” that can accommodate hoses near the pay station.
The “pull-through” spaces are on the outer edge of the loop. The “back-in” spaces are in the center of the loop, except for five “back-ins” located at the top of the outer edge of the loop. These five spaces offer the best location for ferry watching, with spectacular views of Puget Sound. The “pull-through” spaces are shaped in a half-circle. Some of the “half-circles” are a narrow arc, and some are a wider arc. The pull-throughs on one side of the park give you a “ring-side seat” to the ferry dock; you can sit outside and watch the ferries come and go. The pull-throughs on the other side of the loop are against a bluff full of trees and vegetation, not as good of a view. The “back-ins” on the inside of the loop may or may not have a good view of the ferry dock.
Each camping space has a good-size sturdy picnic table and fire ring. However, you are not allowed to use the driftwood for the fires, heavy fines if you are caught. If you need firewood, you are supposed to leave a note and in the pay box and maybe someone will bring some wood to you.
Each site has plenty of room for tents. There is a short, uphill, hiking trail that takes you to the old Fort Casey firing batteries. Older children can have fun exploring and climbing the batteries, while adults and younger children can picnic on the grass. For the lighthouse lovers, there is a beautiful lighthouse that you can tour during afternoon hours in summer, and weekends in winter. As of this writing, there was a temporary food vendor within walking distance in a trailer near the ferry dock selling hot dogs, corn dogs, and Filipino lumpias. However, a sign on an empty building near this temporary vendor indicated that there will be a new restaurant soon.
The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads - Roanoke Rapids, NC
This campground is a new park, just off I-95 exit 171 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. The clubhouse and pool are still under construction.
The campground is big rig friendly, with quick check-in. They also have overnight specials.
The bathrooms and facilities are very, very clean. They have free wifi too. There is no cable yet but there is a good selection of local channels available.
Pegasus Farm Campground - Elkins, WV
WOW! What a peaceful place to stay. Pegasis Farm Campground is very close to town, but it feels like you are way out in the country.
Mark and Bonnie are two of the most genuine people you will meet. They are the real deal. Don’t expect glitz and glamor, but do expect peace and tranquility. This is the place you need to stay when you need a break from the rat race of the world. You will feel like you are visiting friends.
